Due to the prevalence of this pest, many myths and misconceptions about them and their prevention have been formed. It can be hard to tell what’s actually the truth. As mosquito and pest control experts, we’re here to bust some of the most common myths we’ve heard.

Fact or Fiction? 5 Mosquito Myths Explained

There are several myths buzzing around about mosquitoes. You may even have thought some of these were true. But we’re here to help you determine what’s fact and what’s fiction.

Myth 1: “Sweet” Blood Attracts Mosquitoes

If you’re someone who struggles with constantly being bit when you’re outside, you may have been told that your blood must be sweet. There’s a common misconception that blood sugar can attract mosquitoes, and some even believe that those with diabetes are more susceptible to mosquito bites. This, however, is a myth.

Blood sugar or “sweetness” has nothing to do with whether or not mosquitoes are more likely to bite a person. What is true is that certain blood types are more likely to attract mosquitoes. So if you find yourself constantly being bit, it isn’t because of that cookie you just ate—you likely just have an O blood type.

Myth 2: Citronella Candles Provide Ample Protection

Whenever you want to have a summer family barbeque or just enjoy your backyard, you likely try to find ways to prevent mosquitoes from ruining the occasion. One popular method is by lighting a citronella candle to help keep these pests away.

Unfortunately, these candles are not as effective as you might hope. In fact, one study found that there was a slight increase in mosquito attraction when using a citronella candle versus using no protection at all. So while these might give a nice ambiance to your outdoor hangout, they won’t repel these annoying visitors.

Myth 3: Any Bug Spray Will Effectively Repel Mosquitoes

Looking at the options of bug sprays available, you may think any will do to protect you from mosquito bites. So many sprays will promise you a bug-free experience and pride themselves on being the best of the best. But, not all bug sprays are made equal. What you really need to look for are the ingredients. The three most effective ingredients in a good insect repellent will be DEET, Picaridin, or OLE.

Myth 4: Avoid “Giant Mosquitoes” and Their Bite

Have you ever seen what appears to be a large mosquito, roughly the size of a quarter? Anyone would be alarmed at this sight. Many people think these bugs are giant mosquitoes and believe they should avoid being bitten by them due to their size.

We’re here to assure you these bugs are not giant mosquitoes. Rather, they’re harmless bugs known as the crane fly. While scary-looking and often annoying, they do not bite and are likely attracted to the lights in your home.

Myth 5: The Ecosystem Would Be Better Off Without Mosquitoes

There is this notion that due to the harm and diseases mosquitoes cause, the world and the ecosystem would be better off without them. While it is true that mosquitoes contribute to the most human deaths than any other animal, mosquitoes are actually a vital part of the ecosystem. They serve as an essential food source for many different animals, and they even act as pollinators.

If these creatures went extinct, we would see a vast decrease in the population of fish, birds, and other insect-eating species. That being said, there are plenty of places for mosquitoes to exist besides your backyard, so mosquito treatment is still a must for your health.
