What Are Subterranean Termites?

Of the two most prevalent species in Florida, subterranean termites are the most destructive. This species infests your home from underground and therefore is rarely seen until there is noticeable damage. They live in cooperative societies known as colonies that are in some cases made of over a million individual termites. These individuals work together, each having their own roles that contribute to the overall success of the colony.

The main difference between this species and others is they require moisture to thrive. They very easily dry out when no moisture is present which is why they can be found underground where the soil is wet. Since they can’t be seen, a professional inspection is often the only way you’ll know if your home is being affected.

How do we get rid of them?

Here at Anti-Pesto, we utilize the most advanced techniques, systems, and products available to keep your home protected from termites. To treat subterranean colonies, we utilize state-of-the-art Sentricon baiting systems and Termidor liquid treatments. Here’s how Sentricon works:

• The termites ingest the bait and then share it with the rest of the colony until the entire colony is wiped out one by one.

What Are Drywood Termites?

Drywood termites, unlike other species, do not live underground but rather inside the wood itself. This species gets the moisture they need from humid air which allows them to spend most of their time in dry areas of your home. They are most common in the humid, coastal areas of Florida. Since they’re above ground, you’re more likely to notice signs of drywood termites, but you still may not detect them without a professional inspection.

Drywood colonies are typically a lot smaller in number than subterranean and may only have up to a thousand members. Damage from this species is usually contained to a smaller area of the house and can be noticed in areas like hardwood floors, trim, or furniture.

How do we get rid of them?

Here at Anti-Pesto, we offer a “no tent” option for getting rid of drywood termites in homes. If possible, we can utilize Bora-Care, with the active ingredient of Boric acid, which safely kills colonies. This odorless, low-toxic solution takes a little longer than tenting treatments but is a solution to drywood termite infestations.

Some things to keep in mind with this treatment:

• Bora-Care drys clear, but for the first couple of days before drying the wood may appear darker.
• This treatment is non-toxic to both humans and animals, so you can rest easy knowing you’re protected.
• Bora-Care deposits an active ingredient in the wood itself and does not decompose, giving long-term protection.

What Are Formosan Termites?

Formosan termites are a type of Subterranean termite that came from Eastern Asia after World War II. They are able to travel into your home via mud tubes and are able to find their way in through unsealed cracks. Formosan termite colonies are typically larger than other subterranean termite colonies and are able to cause more damage to your home. You are likely to find this type of termite located in damp areas with excessive moisture within the soil, and of course, where large amounts of wood is present.

How do we get rid of them?

Since Formosan termite colonies typically consist of millions of members, it is extremely difficult to get rid of an infestation without professional help.
